The Inexplicable Nesting Period
The part about my pregnancy that still amazes me is the nesting period. It seemed as if just one day, out of nowhere, I was no longer tired. In fact, I was pumped!! I felt like there was this never ending list of things I wanted to get done before the baby arrived and I wanted them done right now! Not only did I want everything to be perfect but I also found myself feeling incredibly maternal toward children, women, and grown men alike. It didn’t matter who you were, I wanted to make sure you were well fed and wearing a sweater in case it gets cold… nobody was safe! So where did this all come from and why was this inexplicable nesting period making me such a maternal perfectionist? Although there isn’t very much hormonal scientific proof I can give you, I do, however, have some of my own explanations.
Theory #1 Because You’ll Never Be Able To Do It Again
I think something just kind of “clicks” when a pregnant woman decides that she not only needs to deep clean the carpets but that she also has to scrub the grout in all of the tile. Something inside of her knows that now is the time to get everything absolutely clean because she won’t have time to do it again for about another 10 years or so.
Theory #2 Because Practice Makes Perfect
I noticed that when I hit my second trimester, I began waking up at odd hours of the night. I read that the reason was that my body was practising for the sleepless nights to come. Well I’ve applied the same practice makes perfect theory to why I felt the need to baby my 30 year old brother when he came to visit. It only makes sense. With my baby just a few weeks away from his appearance into this world, I needed to practice being a Mommy. To someone.. ANYONE! It’s sweet actually…
Theory #3 Because Baby Will Be Here When You Least Expect It
Around 34-36 weeks you will notice that cleaning is no longer enough to keep your nesting habits at bay. Soon you will need to do more. Since there is no more, you will become extremely detail oriented. No a dish out of place, not a speckle of dust on the cabinets,. Why? Because at any moment baby will be arriving. And when that happens… everything must be perfect. This is why a pregnant women can be seem sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, then sweeping the SAME floor within only a few hours time.
