Natural Childbirth vs. C-Section
Natural or Caesarean Section? This question comes up a lot more often now that C-Sections are now an elective procedure. So which childbirth process do you prefer? I have compiled pros for each of the scenarios to hopefully help you make your decision.
Natural Childbirth:
- Most natural childbirth techniques are not invasive, so there’s little potential for harm or side effects for you or your baby.
- There’s no loss of sensation or alertness. You’ll be awake and active during labour and birth - so you can move around more freely and find positions that help you stay comfortable during labor and aid the delivery process when it’s time to push your baby out.
- Your partner will feel involved as you work together to manage your pain.
- Breathing exercises, visualization, and self-hypnosis can be practised ahead of time - and used again later. Many new mothers find themselves drawing on their relaxation techniques in the early days of breastfeeding, while coping with postpartum discomfort, or when caring for a newborn feels especially stressful.
C-Section:
- It is considered that there is less risk to your baby, especially when the baby is in an abnormal position such as breech.
- Over a third of breech births result in a C-Section.
- The Caesarean can be scheduled.
- Although it’s classed as major surgery, a Caesarean is considered low risk and performed thousands of time each year.
